What each part of the CELPIP Reading test asks you to do
- Part 1: Reading Correspondence
- You read a personal or workplace message, answer 6 multiple choice questions about what it says and implies, then fill 5 blanks in a reply to it. The reply never repeats the original wording, so each blank tests whether you understood the first message. 11 questions, about 11 minutes.
- Part 2: Reading to Apply a Diagram
- You get a diagram and an email that refers to it. The email has 5 blanks that can only be filled by checking the diagram, followed by 3 questions about the writer and the purpose of the email. 8 questions, about 9 minutes.
- Part 3: Reading for Information
- You read a four paragraph passage labelled A to D, then decide which paragraph contains each of 9 statements. Option E means the information is not in any paragraph. 9 questions, about 10 minutes.
- Part 4: Reading for Viewpoints
- You read an article that reports different views on an issue, answer 5 questions about the viewpoints, then fill 5 blanks in a reader comment responding to the article. 10 questions, about 13 minutes.
What your score means
The official example chart gives an approximate number of correct answers for each CELPIP level in Reading. The ranges overlap, and the score a level needs shifts with the difficulty of each test form.

Common questions about CELPIP reading practice
How many questions are in the CELPIP Reading test?
- This practice test has 38 questions in four parts: 11, 8, 9 and 10. The official Reading test follows the same four parts and takes 43 to 56 minutes. The length varies because a sitting can include unscored questions that are being tried out, and they look the same as the scored ones.
How is the CELPIP Reading test scored?
- Each correct answer is worth one point. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and a blank counts the same as a wrong one, so it is always worth answering. Your number of correct answers is then converted to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and the conversion is adjusted for the difficulty of each test form.
How many correct answers do I need for CELPIP 9 in reading?
- On the official example chart, level 9 is roughly 31 to 33 correct out of 38, level 8 is roughly 28 to 31 and level 7 is roughly 24 to 28. The ranges overlap and the chart is approximate, because the score each level needs shifts with the difficulty of the test form.
Are these real CELPIP test questions?
- No. They are original practice questions written in the style of the four parts of the CELPIP Reading test. They are not official test questions and they will not appear on your test.
Do I need an account, and is it free?
